In 2021, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) issued the Secure Tertiary Data Backup (STDB) Guideline to banks in an effort to counter the growing risks of potentially catastrophic cyberattacks.

While this proactive approach incentivises banks to protect sensitive data and customers’ wealth, enhance cyber resilience, and improve business continuity, many banks are still struggling to successfully plan, design and implement these recommendations.
